After six years he designed for Ott & Brewer, and both firms produced a domestic version of Irish Belleek the thin cream colored porcelain. Both the firms in the end failed and Lenox started his own business.
The Ceramic Art Company’s products were difference from all other potteries. It was an art studio and not a factory and offered one-of-a-kind art wares in lustrous ivory china. The new modeled vases, pitchers and tea sets produced by 18 employees were met with an enthusiastic reception. It was displayed in most of the exclusive shops.
When America joined World War II, Lenox also joined the war. The semitransparent ivory china had been used in lighting fixtures and proved ideal for ship instrumentation. It permitted dials to be read even when it was dimly lit. Even though the material was certified as durable by the Bureau of Standards it was not stronger to meet the military requirement. The company’s master craftsmen developed lenoxite a ceramic resilient enough to be cast into insulators, resistors, and other specialized forms for use in radar and electronics.
In the year 1902 Lenox offered custom-designed and elaborately decorated service plates. In the year 1906 the firm changed its name to Ceramic Art Company. The most sought after products were boxes, vases, bowls and other giftware produced in both the traditional ivory body. The favorite were the pastels, such as sky blue, primrose yellow, and sea green. In the year 1954 the company built the most advanced ceramics factory of the time.
